Managing the Log of Delivered E-mail

Spam Shredder keeps a log of each message that it sends to your inbox. The log lists only the headers. The headers contain information about where the e-mail came from, to whom it was addressed, each Internet Service Provider (ISP) it passed through, along with the subject and date.

In addition to clearing (deleting) selected or all e-mails listed in the log, you can also do the following:

  • Add addresses to your whitelist
  • Add addresses to your blacklist
  • Tell the learning database that an e-mail is spam

You should review the log periodically, especially if you are receiving spam in your inbox. You can find the spam in the log and add the senders to your blacklist.

You can also have Spam Shredder automatically clear the log after a certain number of days. For more information, see Setting Spam Shredder Filtering Options.

Step Introduction icon To manage the log of delivered e-mail:

  1. Start Spam Shredder, if it is not already running, and display the main window.
  2. In the icon panel, click Delivery Log.
    • For information about the Spam Shredder window, see Understanding the Spam Shredder Window.
    • The Delivery Log panel lists the headers of each e-mail that Spam Shredder sent to your inbox. They are the e-mails that it believed were not spam.
    • If the list is long and you want to see more e-mails at once, click Max in the upper-right corner of the Spam Shredder window. This makes the window larger letting you see more e-mails. Click Norm to return the window to its previous size.
    • You can sort the messages by any column by clicking the column heading. To resize a column, click and drag the right side of the column heading.
  3. Scroll through the list and select each e-mail whose sender you want to add to your whitelist.
    • A check mark displays next to each e-mail you select. These are the senders whose e-mails Spam Shredder will always send to your inbox.
  4. Click Add Selected E-mail to Whitelist.
  5. Scroll through the list and select each e-mail that is spam.
    • A check mark displays next to each message you select. These are the e-mails that you want to send to the learning database, so that it will identify these types of e-mails as spam in the future.
  6. Click This E-mail Is Spam.
    • Spam Shredder sends these e-mails to the learning database. Over time, using this will greatly improve Spam Shredder's ability to identify spam.
  7. If you have received spam from the same address multiple times, scroll through the list and select each e-mail whose sender you want to add to your blacklist.
    • A check mark displays next to each e-mail you select. These are the senders whose e-mails Spam Shredder will always send to quarantine or delete, depending on the option you select.
    • You should add a sender to your blacklist only if you receive multiple messages from the same sender. If your blacklist becomes too long, it can slow e-mail performance.
  8. Click Add Selected E-mail to Blacklist.
  9. Clear the log by selecting the e-mails you want to delete and clicking Clear Selected or by clicking Clear Log to delete the entire log.
    • You should be sure to clear the log periodically, so it does not take up too much space on your hard drive. You can set Spam Shredder to clear old e-mails automatically. For more information, see Setting Spam Shredder Filtering Options.
