Restore Point Restore Point PreviousNext

This feature lets you create a System restore point and to give it a name or description. This feature is used to return your computer to an earlier "clean" state. This is very helpful when you have a system failure or other major problem with your computer. The Restore point allows you to restore the computer to this safe state without having to reinstall the OS or losing your files. Note that this feature is available on Windows® XP and Windows® Vista.

To access and use the Restore points thus created, use the System Restore feature under Accessories.

In Windows® XP Professional and Home Edition to restore the registry, click on Start menu -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore.

Follow the instructions that are then shown on the screen to restore the system to a previous configuration.

Notes:
1. Administrator privileges are required to perform a Windows system restore.
2. Registry entries that were previously permanently deleted using the Recover option in Max Registry Cleaner will be restored in the Windows Registry if the system is restored to a prior configuration which had such entries.

If Windows® XP fails to start:

  • Restart Windows® by using the "Last Known Good Configuration" feature:
    • Start the computer and then press the F8 key when Windows® begins.
    • The Windows Advanced Options menu will appear.
    • Use the ARROW keys to select the "Last Known Good Configuration" and press ENTER.
    • Then select Microsoft Windows® XP and press ENTER.
    • Windows® XP restores the computer to the most recent restore point.

If the above does not help you can run System Restore from the Safe Mode:

  • Boot into safe mode, log on with administrator account privileges and type into the command prompt:

            %systemroot%system32restorerstrui.exe.

  • Then press enter.

Warning: Make sure that your backups are current. If you restore an old backup it could be fatal if you've made major changes to the operating system or hardware since the backups were created. For example, if you've installed Internet Explorer 6 and restore your registry from a backup predating that, your computer will probably not boot up properly.
